After studying and researching in Psychology I trained as a Social Worker and worked as a local authority social worker, specialising in children and families. As Professor of Social Work at Stirling I am Head of the Social Work Subject Group which runs undergraduate and post-graduate qualifying programmes in Social Work as well as a suite of post-qualifying and CPD courses. I am the academic advisor to WithScotland (, a national centrewhich works collaboratively to offer child care and protection dissemination, evaluation, research information and advice for those who work in child protection in Scotland. I am currently co-president of the Association of Professors of Social Work and a member of the Policy Development group of The College of Social Work.

Research Interests:
My main research interests and publications are in child neglect, children's resilience and critical analysis of child welfare and protection practice. I have written books on child development, work with fathers, children's resilience and child neglect - all published by JKP. Recent publications that may be of interest:
